Yesterday , I was just checking social feed and got
some question . People , most of them are student , just passed +2 and puzzled
about choosing career. They have confusion about Horticulture and Agriculture .
My post is all about them . Also I was not getting time to write here during
this C19 pandemic situation as I am digesting information from various source
Including My Subject and some other topics also. Recently I was reading a book,
named ‘Handbook of Agriculture’, published from ICAR New Delhi. This book consists of a lot of
information. If you are searching for a book , then can checkout it.
Be clear , I am not advertising this book ! this book
gives an all round idea about Agriculture that’s why am suggesting for my
junior brothers and sisters.
This discussion is going to be devided
into 4 parts , are:
1.What is Horticulture ?
2.List of Colleges offering Horticulture.
3.Job after Horticulture.
4.Which course is better ? Agriculture or
Horticulture , my opinion.
I have tried to simplify the Article as much as I
can . Lets get started.
1.What is Horticulture?
According
to Wikipedia, Horticulture is the agriculture of plants, mainly for food, materials, comfort and
beauty for decoration.[1] Horticulturists apply knowledge, skills, and
technologies to grow intensively produced plants for human food and non-food
uses and for personal or social needs. Their work involves plant propagation and cultivation with the aim of improving
plant growth, yields, quality, nutritional value and resistance to insects, diseases and
environmental stresses. They work as gardeners, growers, therapists, designers,
and technical advisors in the food and non-food sectors of horticulture.
According to American
horticulturist Liberty
Hyde Bailey,
"Horticulture is the growing of flowers, fruits and vegetables, and of
plants for ornament and fancy."[5] A more precise definition can be given "The
cultivation, processing, and sale of fruits, nuts, vegetables, and ornamental
plants as well as many additional services".[6] It also includes plant
conservation, landscape
restoration, soil management, landscape and garden design, construction and maintenance, and arboriculture. In contrast to agriculture,
horticulture does not include large-scale crop production or animal
husbandry. At present,
horticulture may be defined as the science and technique of production,
processing and merchandising of fruits, vegetables, flowers, spices,
plantations medicinal and aromatic crops.[7]
Ok, I think you have got a litle
idea. Lets discuss in details.
Horticulture
has came from two words_________
1.Hortus-
Means Garden
2.Cultura
– Means Cultivation.
The word ‘ Horticulture ’was first tossed by Peter
Laurenberg.
In Simplified term,
Horticulture is all about Garden Crops ! It’s role starts from planning , filed
preparation, caring to marketing.
The garden crop
maybe Apple , banana or even Cabbage –
cauliflower , varying from place to place.
Horticulturists are also involved to develop crop ,
produce now breed & develop – maintain existing breeds also.
If you are thinking to study about Horticulture then
you have to read all the topics , subjects related to this field.
2.List of Colleges
offering Horticulture:
For your advantage , I am providing a complete list
of Agriculture colleges , Affiliated by ICAR. Most of them are offering
Horticulture Also.

Most of the people ,
prefer these colleges are:
Acharya
N.G. Ranga Agricultural University , Aligarh Muslim University , Annamalai University , College of Agriculture
Pune , College of Horticulture Kerala , Gujarat Agricultural University , Kerala Agricultural University , Tamil Nadu
Agricultural University , University of Agricultural Sciences Bangalore.
Every institution has
its pros and cons , depending on various aspects. Do a little study about that
college before admission.
3.Job after Horticulture:
A large number of Job is available in this sector
including Government and Non Government. Some government post prefers B.SC
horticulture fresh student also.
But my opinion, at least complete M.Sc or equivalent
degree before join a Job! It’ll provide you a rabble of advantages.
In General,
Job, Based on this sector are Teaching , Research , Management , horticulturist, floriculturist ,
pomologist etc.
You should go towards various glorious Government
Job through cracking entrance exam i.e Civil Services , Banking etc.
Common Jobs are:
- Project
Manager , Gardener , Foreman , Horticulturist , Horticultural Education
Supervisor , Assistant Manager
Human Resources , Professor , Scientist etc.
4.Which course is better ?
Agriculture or Horticulture , my opinion:
It is a little controversial matter.
Agriculture and Horticulture both are the two faces
of a coin. People , in horticulture field, needs to study most of the
Agricultural subjects and Vice versa.
Agriculture and horticulture both are high demanding
subject, but from the aspects of popularity and competition, Agriculture Wins.
And, I’ll prefer Agriculture more as Myself is in
this field. But If you have interest, you can go towards Horticulture.
I repeat ,
both are Highly demanding !
And yep, Study hard , dream high ! Gather
Information , Gain Knoledge !
No Cheating ! Earning a bucket of number by cheating
is useless ! Not your Mark Sheet ; but
your Knoledge will give you
“ROOJI ROOTI” !
Your knowledge is going to be reflect on your JOB
POFILE !
